DIILS Presented Second Seminar in Six Months in Slovenia - Key Subjects Included the UN Political Process
The Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS) presented its second seminar in 6 months to Slovenian participants. This seminar focused on the legal considerations involved in Peace Operations. Key subjects included the UN Political Process, a study of current Peacekeeping operations, Status of Forces Agreements, and how to train units for Peacekeeping duties. The DIILS team comprised Dr. John Clarke of the Marshall Center; Lt Col Joe Anderson, USA, of the Naval War College; Mr. Guy Abbate, Instructor in the DIILS resident program on Peace Operations; and DIILS Country Program Manager, Major D.J. Riley
DIILS First Seminar in Croatia Presented to Participants from 15 Different Croatian Agencies
The Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS) presented a week-long seminar on "Legal Aspects of Interagency Cooperation" in Zagreb, Croatia, with a goal of assisting the Croatian government in establishing a National Center for Crisis Management. The DIILS team of Colonel James Noteboom, Oregon Army National Guard; Grant Dillon of the National Interagency Civil-Military Institute; LT James Benoit, USCG, of Joint Interagency Task Force West; and Major Chris Supernor, USAF, DIILS Country Program Manager presented examples of U.S. interagency cooperation in a variety of situations. Participants took part in discussions designed to them create a National Center for Crisis Management.
DIILS and JUSMAG Thailand Present Seminar on "Military Operations Other Than War" in Bangkok
DIILS presented a week-long seminar on "Military Operations Other Than War" in Bangkok. The participants included military officers, prosecutors, attorneys, and judges. General Suthee, the Judge Advocate General of the Thai Army made opening and closing remarks for the seminar. The U.S. team of Colonel Richard Jackson, USA, CDR Burton Waltman, USN-Director of DIILS, LTC Stephen Marchioro, USMC, and Major Chris Supernor, USAF, DIILS Country Manager for Thailand led discussions on a wide range of topics including: Counter Drug Operations, Status of Forces Agreements, and Rules of Engagement. LTC Krisna Bovornratanaraks of the International section of the Judge Advocate General's Department of the Thai Army presented the Thai point of view on a number of key topics. This week-long program is a continuation of the close relationship that DIILS, JUSMAG Thailand, and the Government of Thailand have had since 1996.
DIILS Hosted a Site Visit to Washington DC for a Delegation of Military and Civilian Officials from Armenia
DIILS hosted a delegation from Armenia as part of the initial sequence of the newly started program with the Republic of Armenia. Major Chris Supernor, Country Program Manager for DIILS, arranged a combination of visits to significant Washington sites that included the White House, the Capitol Building, and the Pentagon. Most important, the delegation was able to meet and discuss issues with key U.S. personnel including Major General Walter Huffman, the Judge Advocate General of the Army. During the visit, curriculum for the first DIILS seminar in Armenia was planned, and details worked out for the event.
DIILS Continued a Successful Relationship with Romania During Two Seminars Held in Bucharest and Brasov
DIILS continued a successful relationship with Romania during two seminars held in Bucharest and Brasov. Major D.J. Riley, USMC, DIILS Program Manager for Romania, led a team consisting of Colonel Richard Price, USAF; Lieutenant Colonel Pat Dennis, USAF; CDR Walt Frederick, JAGC, USN; and Major Clifford McCabe, Army National Guard, for two weeks of seminars that focused on the Legal Aspects of Air Operations and the Legal Aspects of Military-Media Relations. The seminars were part of an ongoing program between Romania and DIILS that goes back to 1995.
